General Thailand Information
Phuket lies 867 km from Bangkok and is Thailand's largest island, and the country's only island province. With a population of 1.6 million, Phuket ranks as the sixth largest province in Thailand. Measuring approximately 21 km wide by 48 km long, the island is sparsely populated outside Phuket Town. The landscape is one of lush green hills, coconut groves, rubber plantations and a coastline dotted with a dozen spectacular beaches. Unspoilt stretches of fine white sand are found along the entire west coast of the island.

Climate

There are 2 distinct seasons in Phuket: The rainy season (May till late October) during which the monsoon winds blow from the southwest and the dry season (November to April) when the winds come from the northeast.

The best time to visit Phuket is from November though to March when it isn't so humid, and the cool breezes keep things comfortable. The average temperature is around 24C to 32C.

The hottest time is from April through May, with temperatures ranging from 27C to 36C. The rest of the year the usual pattern is brief but heavy showers, with plenty of sunshine between downpours with temperatures ranging from 20C to 33C.

Language

Thai is the official language however English is widely spoken and understood in Phuket.

Passports

Each person must carry a passport with at least 6 months validity from the date of arrival into Thailand. Generally speaking, most visitors from western countries will receive a standard 30 day upon arrival visa when entering Thailand. Visitors wishing to stay longer than 30 days will need to obtain a visa from a Thai embassy or consulate before entering Thailand.

Currency

The Thai unit of currency is the Baht. Major currencies and travellers cheques can be cashed at hotels, money exchanges, banks and major shopping centres. You can view the current exchange rate here: http://www.oanda.com/convert/classic

Religion

As Buddhism is the major religion in Thailand (95% of population), visitors should show respect to all Buddha images large and small. Never climb on any Buddha image to take photos as this is perceived as a lack of respect. When visiting shrines and temples (Wat), people should remember to dress neatly.
