Eye CentreEye CentreSee for yourselfLaser vision correction is a procedure that improves vision by permanently changing the shape of the cornea via the use of a laser. Often referred to as LASIK Eye Surgery it is the most commonly performed type of laser procedure and an effective treatment for a wide range of vision problems. It has been accepted worldwide as a valid permanent alternative to wearing glasses or contact lens. LASIK can be both effective and affordable with many people finding that the cost of replacing glasses and contact lenses over many years can easily exceed the cost of LASIK surgery. The eye centre at Bangkok hospital, Phuket provides you with excellent Eye Centre Services including:
“Bangkok Phuket LASIK Center” is staffed with highly skilled sub-specialists and ophthalmologists and possesses the latest excimer laser technology for complete diagnosis and treatment of the refractive problems: myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism. The procedure is carried out in a room having 24-hour nursing services and medical supervision. The staff apply quality care to help their patients achieve perfect vision. Conditions treated by LASIK and PRK
SBK - New technology now availableSimply stated, SBK is an advanced form of surface ablation that allows patients a visual recovery time measured in hours rather than days. The slightly more detailed explanation about this exciting, proven advancement in laser vision correction is that SBK is a two-stage procedure comprising the removal and retention of the epithelial layer by the femtosecond laser and the traditional excimer laser to correct the refractive error. The term SBK refers to the part of the cornea where the cleavage plane is created: the Sub-Bowman’s layer in the anterior part of the cornea. This prevents almost all the potential complications of the traditional LASIK flap, (decreasing the structural integrity of the cornea, a 30-plus percentage incidence of dry eyes, and susceptibility to trauma) while providing post operative comfort and rapid visual recovery. SBK is now approved, because of its safety and quick visual recovery, for U.S. military pilots and astronauts. Intralase SBK and PRK are both considered “surface ablation” procedures; proven to be the safest means of providing laser vision correction. Dr. Khemawan Vettayawikoon graduated from faculty of Medicine, Mahidol University (Siriraj), Bangkok. She achieved a certificate of Thai board of Ophthalmology from Rajvithi Hospital and a certificate of Specialist in Cornea and Refractive surgery from King Memorial Chulalongkorn Hospital. She started her profession as a general practitioner in Suratthani Hospital, and joined Donsak Community Hospital and Bantakhun Community Hospital as Deputy Hospital Director. She later joined Patong hospital in Phuket before her specialized training of Ophthalmology at Rajvithi Hospital. Now she is a full-time doctor at Bangkok Hospital Phuket. Her article of “Interobserver Agreement in the Interpretation of Single-Field Digital Fundus Images for Diabetic Retinopathy Screening” was published in journal Ophthalmology, 2004. She also attended the Asia-ARVO Meeting on research in vision and ophthalmology in Singapore in 2007. Now she is the member of the royal college of ophthalmologist of Thailand, and member of cornea society of Thailand. ProceduresWe believe that you should be aware of what is involved in the above procedures. Therefore, we will attempt to provide you with as much information as possible in order for you to make an informed decision. Your surgeon will talk to you about details regarding your specific procedure. LASIK Eye SurgeryWith LASIK, a Microkeratome laser is used to shave the cornea to create a flap. The flap then is opened to expose tissue just below the cornea's surface. Re-shaping of the cornea to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism is then performed by removing ultra-thin layers with the use of the Excimer laser. Finally, the flap is returned to its original position, without sutures. The vast majority of LASIK patients only feel mild discomfort. A clear, light plastic shield is placed on your eye(s) following surgery. This is worn for the rest of the first day, and every night for one to two weeks. It prevents you rubbing your eye(s) in your sleep. You will also be given eyedrops to use for the next few days. PRK - Photorefractive KeratectomyPRK differs from LASIK in that no corneal flap is created prior to the laser treatment. During PRK eye surgery, the surgeon accesses the cornea's inner layers by removing the thin outer layer of the cornea, the epithelium, which has been softened with anesthetic eye drops. The Excimer laser is then positioned over the center of the cornea and changes the shape of the cornea by removing a tiny amount of corneal tissue. This part of the procedure can take less than a few minutes for most patients. Then the surgeon will place a bandage contact lens on the eye. This contact lens is left on the eye for a few days while the epithelium grows back over the surface of the cornea. Having had LASIK you will appreciate your vision getting clearer, hour by hour, for the rest of the day after your treatment. However, a very significant improvement will be noticed the next day. PRK usually takes a little longer (3-7 days). SBK -SBK is a two-stage procedure comprising the removal and retention of the epithelial layer by the femtosecond laser and the traditional excimer laser to correct the refractive error. The term SBK refers to the part of the cornea where the cleavage plane is created: the Sub-Bowman’s layer in the anterior part of the cornea. General InformationPatients who wear contact lenses are asked to stop wearing them in order to allow time for the shape of your cornea to revert back to it's natural shape. This then means that an accurate measurement can be taken of the amount of corneal tissue to remove.
Risks and ComplicationsWhile most patients are extremely pleased with the results of LASIK surgery, like all medical procedures there are some risks involved. We therefore recommend you discuss all risks with your specialist at Bangkok Hospital Phuket prior to committing to having LASIK surgery performed.
